Women are pretty much amazing. As mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, and friends, they often put others before themselves—making sure that the kids have a perfectly packed lunch, dad gets in to see the doctor, the husband’s outfit actually matches, and everyone around them is doing well. At times women seem to possess superhuman abilities that leave their male counterparts scratching their heads. However, women are sometimes so good at taking care of others that they forget to take care of themselves.
That’s why these seven tips for better health are for all of you amazing women out there.
1. Binge on the good stuff
Healthy eating is vital to curb the risk of developing a number of illnesses. Eating healthy will also give you the energy to tackle the day. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean meats are the way to go. Steer clear of empty calories, or foods that are high in sodium, sugar, and fat. Ask your doctor (we can help you find one if you don’t have one!) about multivitamins and calcium supplements.
2. Mandatory mammos and going to the gyno
You only need to see your gynecologist once a year for a routine check up and pap. You can visit your gynecologist every three years so long as you do not encounter any problems with your vaginal health or become pregnant. If you’re older than 40, you’ve got to get in and see your doctor for an annual mammogram, and all women older than 20 should complete a Breast Self-Exam every month.
Women often have a tendency to let their emotions get the best of them. A little freak out or a good cry is totally normal, but don’t turn into a walking stress case. Take time every day for a little R & R.
4. Get your beauty rest
5. Love your body and your mind
We all know how important exercise is, but it’s equally as important to maintain a positive body image. Having a negative self-image wrecks havoc on your self-esteem, love life, and overall wellbeing. You exercise your body, why not your brain? Mental stimulation improves brain function and helps fight cognitive decline. Even in old age, the brain can grow new neurons. So use it or lose it! Commit to a lifetime of learning.
6. Treat your feet and your bones
Shoes are a shopping weakness for many women, so while a pair of 5-inch stilettos may do wonders for your figure, it’s really doing a number on your spine, posture, hips, knees, feet…basically your whole body. Bad posture and not taking care of your bones can lead to osteoporosis.
7. Be heart smart
Nearly five times as many women will die from heart attacks this year than from breast cancer. Learn the easy and simple ways to help prevent heart disease, be aware of the signs and symptoms, and know how to get tested.
Putting yourself first is often easier said than done, but it’s important to remember that if you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of others. St. Mark’s Hospital wants to be sure all you women are taking care of yourselves, which why we encourage you to visit our Center for Breast Care to receive a mammogram. You can schedule an appointment by calling 866-887-3999. We look forward to seeing you!
